Air quality - travel planning

  • Our second Corporate Travel Plan was published in 2005.
  • It is in line with the Government's 2003 Air Transport Paper.
  • We are currently developing our next travel plan in preparation for our move to T5 in March 2008.

More about our air quality and our travel plan

The British Airways shuttle bus service

The Corporate Travel Plan encourages the use of public transport wherever and whenever possible.

To help with this, we operate a staff shuttle bus service around our sites at Heathrow airport. This service can be used by British Airways staff and contractors along with invited visitors.

The British Airways Commuter Centre

A Commuter Centre at our Waterside headquarters provides staff with information and advice on their commuting options.

The Centre promotes and encourages greater use of 'green transport' solutions such as public transport, cycling and car sharing. The advice is aimed at addressing environmental issues such as road congestion and air quality.

Staff can register for the Airport Car-share scheme at the centre and access rail and bus timetables, maps, information about travel-cards and travel-related discounts.

Travel planning and Terminal 5 (T5)

The opening of Terminal 5 (T5) in March 2008, presents opportunities to review how staff travel to, from and around the airport.

Currently, our staff work at a variety of locations across the airport. With the opening of the new terminal, the majority of our crew and terminal staff will report directly to T5.

The terminal will have good public transport links that will offer customers and staff the option to leave their car at home. This will help reduce traffic congestion and emissions being generated.

A RailAir bus.
  • We are working with Transport For London and other bus operators who will start new high frequency bus services on local routes to T5.
  • Our own buses will be rescheduled to link T5 and our headquarters to other British Airways sites.

The British Airways Company Travel Plan will be updated ahead of the opening of T5. The plan will take into account the decision from the government on a third runway at Heathrow.

Working with BAA

We are working closely with BAA on a variety of new initiatives.

Plans include:

A British Airways shuttle bus.
  • minimising staff journey lengths through the location of car parks
  • a new high frequency shuttle service between our headquarters and Terminal 5 (T5)
  • the Heathrow Express and the Piccadilly Line operating to T5

BAA is also spending more than £5m to obtain approval to build the Air Track rail link. This will run from Staines to T5 and connect the airport to the southwest train network.
