Air quality - travel planning

In line with our move to Terminal 5 we are developing a new travel plan. This builds on our previous plan which itself was designed to be in line with the UK Government's 2003 Air Transport Paper.

The travel plan focuses on our UK operation since this where we can make the biggest impact. Its main focus is on encouraging our colleagues and customers to use public transport wherever possible. We are doing this through:

More about our air quality and our travel plan

The British Airways Commuter Centre

A Commuter Centre at our Waterside headquarters at Heathrow provides colleagues with information and advice on their commuting options.

The Centre promotes and encourages greater use of 'cleaner transport' solutions such as public transport, cycling and car sharing. The advice is aimed at addressing environmental issues such as road congestion and air quality.

Colleagues can register for the Airport Car-share scheme at the centre and access rail and bus timetables, maps, information about travel-cards and travel-related discounts.

The British Airways shuttle bus service

The Corporate Travel Plan encourages the use of public transport wherever and whenever possible.

To help with this, we operate a staff shuttle bus service around our sites at Heathrow airport. This service can be used by British Airways staff and contractors along with invited visitors, thereby reducing the use of private vehicles around the airport.

Terminal 5 Transport Infrastructure

The opening of Terminal 5 (T5) in March 2008, presented a fantastic opportunity to review how our colleagues and customers travel to, from and around Heathrow.

With the opening of the new terminal, the majority of our operation and therefore colleagues and customers now go directly to T5.

The terminal has good public transport links that offer the option to leave the car at home. This will help reduce traffic congestion and emissions.

A RailAir bus.

We have also worked with Transport For London and other bus operators to introduce new high frequency bus services on local routes to T5 and our own buses have been rescheduled to link T5 and our headquarters to other British Airways sites.

The London underground was also extended to connect T5 with the Piccadilly Line and we also have easy access onto the Heathrow Express to Paddington.

Working with BAA

We continue to work with BAA on a variety of new initiatives. These include;

A British Airways shuttle bus.
  • Air Track rail link will run from Staines to Terminal 5 (T5) and connect the airport to the southwest train network. BAA is spending more than £5m to obtain approval for the scheme.
  • Minimising staff journey lengths through the location of car parks.
  • A new high frequency shuttle service between our headquarters and Heathrow T5.
  • The Heathrow Express and the Piccadilly Line operating to T5.
