Our work - South Africa youth development

 
Working in partnership with Charlton Athletic FC, children from Mitchells Plain Township, Cape Town learn football skills. Children participating in the British Airways wellbeing workshop in Alexandra Township, Johannesburg.

For the last 5 years, British Airways has been a key partner in the development of a major youth diversion and safer schools project in Alexandra Township, Johannesburg and more recently in two township communities in Cape Town.

Fast facts

  • Over 56 youth coaches have now been trained gaining the FA Level 1 Coaching Skills qualification with the help of Charlton FC.
  • Over 10,000 children have participated in the initiative.
  • British Airways has provided flights and cargo space for the transportation of sports equipment.
  • The programme has gained support and funding from the British High Commission.
  • In 2006 the project was extended to the townships of Mitchells Plain and Khyaleitshia in Cape Town where a further 48 coaches have been trained.

Health and well being workshops

As part of the initiative, British Airways staff have run health and well-being workshops for over 1,500 children whilst the Metropolitan Police have facilitated activities on personal safety. 2009 will see the further continuation of the training and education programme.
