Workplace - invest in people

Whilst we must ensure our colleagues have the right tools to do the job they must also have the right knowledge and skills sets to use these tools.

We can only achieve this if our colleagues are continuously developing and learning.

More about investing in people

Improved training

BA colleagues receiving training.

In the last year we delivered 235,000 days of training. We also welcomed some 3,100 people into the company which required a high level of induction training and a refresh for our new entrant training programmes.

Following the government review of vocational education, led by Lord Leitch, we have explored how we can invest more effectively in the development of our employees to build both their skills and educational standards.

One of our significant achievements was becoming the first national airline recognised as a training centre by the City & Guilds. All new entrant cabin crew now achieve an NVQ Level 2 qualification on completion of their training - equivalent to 4 GCSE's.

We envisage more internal training programmes will follow suit and employees undertaking courses in the future will achieve nationally recognised qualifications.

Leadership development

BA colleagues having a group meeting.

Leadership is a significant priority. We have developed a number of programmes to improve the capability and performance of our leaders.

This includes a one-day programme for all managers, called 'Leading the Business', which focuses on the challenges of managing change, engaging employees and delivering results to support our business strategy. We have developed a leadership website to provide information and training materials to support managers with all aspects of their roles.

We are increasing our focus on talent and leadership development over the coming year as we build the capability we need for growth.

Developing our company travel plan

BA colleagues discussing travel facilities for the Commuter Centre.

Develop our company travel plan, providing facilities to encourage and enable people to cycle to work, car share or use other means of public transport.

We have also worked with Transport For London and other bus operators to introduce new high frequency bus services on local routes to Terminal 5 at Heathrow and our own buses have been rescheduled to link T5 and our headquarters to other British Airways sites.

The London underground was also extended to connect T5 with the Piccadilly Line and we also have easy access onto the Heathrow Express to Paddington.
