Marketplace - Responsible customer

British Airways is working with The Travel Foundation, a charity that is helping to care for the people, environment, and cultures of the communities you visit.

More about responsible air travel

We want to make it simpler for you to undertake your air travel responsibly. We hope you find the below information useful and it gives you food for thought when you book your next trip.

Before you go

There are steps you take even before you arrive at the airport to help reduce the impact of your journey. Below are a few pointers:

  • Consider donating to the One Destination Carbon Fund when booking your flight on ba.com. The fund helps support low carbon community projects across the UK.
  • Print only the information you need to take with you to the airport - e-tickets and online check-in significantly reduce the need for lots of paper when you travel.
  • Pack lightly as we burn more fuel to carry more weight - which means more emissions. We're doing everything we can to reduce weight onboard the aircraft and packing lightly means our customers can do their bit.
  • Use public transport to get to the airport - this helps ease traffic congestion and reduces emissions from your journey. Terminal 5 has been built with public transport access at its core.
  • "Know before you go" - check out The Foreign and Commonwealth Office website packed with independent travel tips and advice for over 200 countries.

In-flight

Lady reading a magazine on board.

Even onboard the aircraft we are trying to offer ways for our customers to get involved in One Destination.

  • Recycle your newspaper - when disembarking short haul flights place your newspaper on the front seats to help our colleagues with recycling.
  • Tell us what you think - Every year we listen to the views of over 600,000 customers through our surveys and research. We hand out surveys at random. If asked please let us know what you think.
  • Our Corporate Responsibility section in the onboard High Life and Business Life magazines is a regular feature giving you a chance to quiz Willie, learn about what's going on across One Destination as well as pick up more hints.

We also offer a range of services onboard our flight to help take care of you.

When you arrive, these helpful hints will make sure you maximise the benefits you bring to your destination whilst minimising any environmental impact:

  • Eat at local bars and cafes
  • Buy locally made souvenirs or crafts
  • Go on excursions that use local guides and drivers
  • Get around on public transport, bicycles or even walking when possible
  • Make sure you don't buy products made from endangered plants or wild animals (including hardwoods, corals, shells, starfish, ivory, fur, feathers, skins, horn, teeth, eggs, reptiles and turtles)
  • Turn off heating/air conditioning when it's not required and switch everything off when leaving your room
