Leading our industry - research and development

We are taking steps to help encourage fuel efficiency across our industry and to aid the development of alternative, more environmentally friendly fuels:

• working with engine manufacturers to ensure that fuel-efficient technology is used for new generations of aircraft and engines
• pushing for air traffic control to be simplified so that aircraft are in the air for less time
• sponsored research by Imperial College London into renewable aircraft fuels (2003)
• working with Boeing to investigate biofuels
• working with Rolls Royce looking into the performance of aero-engines powered by lower-carbon fuels
