Waste - recycling

British Airways aims to recycle half of the waste we dispose of and to send none to landfill by 2010.

This goal is a testament to the priority we are placing on waste management and the reason why we are introducing new systems to measure and track performance in this area.

Recycling to date

A man reading a newspaper.
  • 85% of waste generated in the construction of the new Terminal 5 site at Heathrow.
  • 28% of solid waste at Heathrow and Gatwick.
  • Onboard magazines and newspapers off arriving shorthaul flights at Heathrow.
  • All printer and photocopier paper in our UK offices is made of recycled paper and is in turn recycled.

Innovations

A collection of mobile phones.

Our drive to manage waste responsibly covers less obvious ways of recycling too:

  • worldwide furniture management contract with Amaryllis who promote waste minimisation including the reuse and recycling of office furniture
  • donating onboard blankets to an elephant orphanage in Kenya
  • a mobile phone recycling scheme that sees phones sold to developing markets at affordable prices (with proceeds donated to the nature conservation charity, Fauna and Flora International)
  • building environmental considerations into the buying, running and disposal of our IT equipment and processes
