Noise and air quality - noise

British Airways aircraft in flight. Ground staff in conversation.

Noise has historically been the main environmental issue for people living close to airports. It remains high on the agenda of public concern, with the focus mainly on aircraft operations. There is also potential for noise disturbance from ground operations and maintenance.

A balanced approach to noise management

Our continuing efforts to minimise noise are centred on ICAO's 'Balanced Approach to Aircraft Noise Management'.

The two key areas appropriate for us are:

  • further investment in new technology – quieter and cleaner aircraft and ground vehicle fleets
  • the development of more efficient operating procedures
