Our work - Kenya youth development

School children in Mukuru, Nairobi. Pupils in the British Airways provided ICT Learning Centre, Mukuru, Nairobi.

In early 2007 British Airways refurbished and donated over 460 computers and laptops which were flown to projects in Kenya and Pakistan. The software and connectivity for the computers were donated by Cisco and Microsoft.

IT suites and hairdressing training salons

We have provided tickets to a team of skilled professionals to Kenya to construct the first of four IT suites and a hairdressing salon in the Mukuru slum area of Nairobi. The Mukuru Slum is home to an estimated 600,000 people who live on less than a dollar a day.

  • The IT centres will benefit over 4,000 children in four schools.
  • Over time each school's ICT Learning Centre will offer outreach facilities for health and community workers as well as to members of the local community.

The hairdressing training salon was established in partnership with Colomer Revlon to provide apprenticeships for young disadvantaged adults in Mukuru. British Airways has co-funded the salary for the Salon's training Stylist.

Teacher training and exchange programme

Developing computer skills in the ICT centre provided by British Airways, Mukuru, Nairobi.

At the heart of the project is an extensive head-teacher and teacher-training programme. The programme includes a teacher exchange initiative between Heathrow Primary School and the four Mukuru schools. British Airways provided the link between the schools and sponsored the teachers' flights.

Transporting local crafts

We have also transported, free of charge, the crafts made by young adults at the Mukuru Promotion Centre, back to Heathrow Primary School for them to sell on their behalf, with all proceeds going back to the project in Mukuru.
