In early 2007 British Airways refurbished and donated over 460 computers and laptops which were flown to projects in Kenya and Pakistan. The software and connectivity for the computers were donated by Cisco and Microsoft.
We flew a team of skilled professionals to Kenya to construct the first of four IT suites and a hair-dressing salon in the Mukuru slum area of Nairobi. The Mukuru Slum is home to an estimated 600,000 people who live on less than a dollar a day.
The hairdressing training salon was established in partnership with Colomer Revlon to provide apprenticeships for young disadvantaged adults in Mukuru. British Airways has co-funded the salary for the Salon's training Stylist.
At the heart of the project is an extensive head-teacher and teacher-training programme. The programme includes a teacher exchange initiative between Heathrow Primary School and the four Mukuru schools. British Airways provided the link between the schools and sponsored the teachers' flights.
We have also transported, free of charge, the crafts made by young adults at the Mukuru Promotion Centre, back to Heathrow Primary School for them to sell on their behalf, with all proceeds going back to the project in Mukuru.
