Biodiversity at Harmondsworth Moor

In 1993, we began planning our new corporate headquarters at Harmondsworth Moor. As part of the planning agreement we were asked to restore and landscape areas of the Moor, formerly a landfill site, to its natural state and open it to the public.

When David Bellamy officially opened our new, 240 acre park to the public in June 2000, the area included several miles of pretty river banks, lakes, ponds and acres of grassland and young woodland. The park is open seven days a week and is now home to a wealth of wildlife and several rare species have been spotted there including insects like the stag beetle, river and marshland plants, skylarks and harvest mice.

With the help of a team of Park Rangers, we're committed to continue protecting the wildlife at Harmondsworth Moor.

Our biodiversity policy

Harmondsworth Moor.

"Biodiversity is the wealth of wildlife in the world around us, from wildflowers and insects to mammals and birds" – The Wildlife Trusts.

The management of biodiversity at British Airways Waterside headquarters falls under British Airways Standing Instruction 5, "Environmental Policy".

For diversity this means we will:

  • comply with all legal requirements relevant to biodiversity and managing biodiversity
  • identify, conserve and enhance biodiversity at Harmondsworth Moor
  • work with partners to establish principles for the use and management of Harmondsworth Moor

Biodiversity benchmark

Biodiversity Logo.

As a sign of our commitment to biodiversity, we were one of the first seven UK companies to be given the Wildlife Trust's Business and Biodiversity Benchmark.

Since then, criteria for the award have become more strict.

In June 2007, we were only the fourth company in the UK to receive the Wildlife Trusts' new Biodiversity Benchmark for Land Management. It was a real achievement to receive this award following the recent introduction of this stricter criteria. Biffa, Marshals Maltby Works and Center Parcs were the other three.
