Air quality - our ground fleet

British Airways ground vehicles and aircraft.

Air quality on the ground

Our aim is to make our ground vehicles quieter and cleaner wherever possible.

Investing in cleaner vehicles

We have invested £25m in more than 550 newer, more efficient airport vehicles for ground staff and operations. This includes 150 new environmentally friendly electric baggage tugs, built at Linde Material Handling Ltd's Basingstoke factory. These baggage tugs will used at our new home at Terminal 5.

Ground fleet reduction

As well as ensuring that the vehicles had the necessary power to do their job, environmental considerations were a key factor in the purchase of our new ground equipment vehicles. The overall number vehicles required for the whole of Terminal 5 will reduce the overall number of vehicles required to run our Heathrow operation (currently around 1300) by just under 40%.

Heathrow Clean Vehicles Programme

We are members of the Heathrow Clean Vehicles Programme.

We have been awarded their Diamond rating, the highest award possible. As part of the programme, we aim to achieve:

  • a 5% reduction in the mileage of our ground vehicles by 2008
  • a 10% reduction in mileage by 2011
