Measuring efficiency - ground energy

British Airways' Waterside headquarters.

As well as taking steps to use less fuel in the air, we're also committed to becoming more efficient on the ground. So far, we've managed to cut the amount of energy we use on the ground by 23% since 2000.

Our aim is to be awarded a Carbon Trust Energy Efficiency Accreditation by June 2008, and we have:

  • set ourselves a short term target to reduce energy consumption in our buildings by 10% over the next two years
  • audited our ten most energy hungry buildings and are working to introduce 100 energy saving initiatives in each
  • published the results of all our research on energy consumption in a monthly report
  • set up 'energy working groups' across all the property we own
  • been working closely with the BAA to help make sure Terminal 5 is as energy efficient as possible

We are also developing energy awareness campaigns tailored for our staff.
