Environment

We recognise that in providing the economically and socially vital service of air transport we have an impact on our planet, that's why in 1992 we became the first airline to report our environmental performance.

As part of becoming the world's most responsible airline our environment strategy is to ensure we lead the industry in managing and minimising our environmental impact.

Our focus is on:

Forest landscape against a lake.
  • How we fly - Minimising our impact through a more efficient operation
  • What we fly - Minimising our impact through the latest technology including airframes, engines and alternative fuels
  • What we buy - Ensuring we fully reflect the cost of our impact on the environment through economic based tools such as emissions trading

Our goals across these areas are:

  • Zero waste to landfill in the UK by 2010
  • Improve our carbon efficiency by 25% by 2025 - reducing the grammes of carbon dioxide per passenger kilometre from 111 to 83 grammes
  • Reduce the average noise per flight by 15% by 2015*
  • 50% reduction in our net CO2 emissions by 2050

*Please note this is measured as the network average quota count (QC) for combined landing and take-off cycle.

To achieve this we have developed a comprehensive programme geared around the following core topics:

Tree branch against a natural spa.
  • Climate change - our overall strategy is to ensure we fully contribute our share of global carbon dioxide emission reductions by 2050
  • Waste - our focus on reducing, reusing, recycling and responsible disposal of our waste
  • Noise - reducing our impact on local communities around the airports we serve
  • Air quality - improving air quality for communities around the airports we serve
