Carbon footprint - offsetting and trading

Both carbon trading and carbon offsetting are based on the same principle. By investing in clean technology or renewable energy to reduce CO2 emissions elsewhere, we can balance emissions created by flying.

Carbon offsetting

British Airways was the first airline to introduce a voluntary passenger carbon offsetting scheme.

We've offered a carbon offset scheme through ba.com since 2005. This allows people to pay to offset the effects of their journey. The money raised helps fund projects around the world that reduce the amount of carbon emitted.

Carbon trading

At British Airways, we strongly believe in carbon trading as a means of reducing aircraft carbon emissions. That's why we actively campaign for carbon trading and were the first airline in the world to take part through the voluntary UK Emissions Trading Scheme.

As a member of this programme, we reduced our UK carbon emissions by 23%.
