Change for Good celebrates 10 years of changing children's lives
Image of Change for Good envelope.
We are delighted to be celebrating 10 years of the Change for Good partnership between British Airways and UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund). The programme, which began in 1994, has raised over £18 million to date, funding UNICEF programmes in over 50 countries around the world. The money is raised by collecting foreign currency from British Airways customers on-board flights and can also be handed in to British Airways Travel Shops. The success of the programme is largely due to our Cabin Crew who act as "Champions" in the sky. On a voluntary basis they give announcements during flights, collect donations, and offer further information to customers who wish to know more.

2004 Funding

India
Change for Good has donated £485,250 for HIV education work in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The project educates children about all aspects of HIV/AIDS including how it can be transmitted and the symptoms of the disease, as well as dispelling the myths about HIV. It also encourages children to be supportive of people living with HIV/AIDS. The children’s determination and commitment to take the knowledge they have and spread awareness in their communities is particualrly impressive. This is being done not only by word of mouth, but also by organising street theatre in the slums to get the messages across.

In Mexico City a donation of £150,000 helped street children by funding various education and support initiatives including an anti-violence programme in schools to help prevent children working on the streets in the first place.

Emergency relief

Iran
£30,000 was sent to help out with relief efforts in the aftermath of the earthquake in Iran.

2003 funding

Kenya
At the start of the year £250,000 was donated to Nairobi, Kenya, for street children and orphans at reception centres established by the ministry of Local Government. The donation purchased 60 education kits containing exercise books, pens, pencils, rulers, sharpeners, slates, blackboards and chalk. The funding will also provide additional supplies and teacher training services at the centres.

South Africa

Change for Good is making a difference to the lives of young people in Johannesburg, South Africa. This year, a donation of £171,000 has funded two projects. The first of these projects gives young unemployed people the opportunity to go through a nine-week programme, equipping them with life skills and positive attitudes that will enable them to become productive members of society. 70% of the young people who go through the programme are able to take more control of their lives, either by finding jobs, starting a small business, or continuing their education.

Angola
A vital immunisation campaign to eradicate maternal and neo-natal tetanus (MNT) and save the lives of mothers and their unborn children received a donation of £200,000. MNT kills over 30,000 women and 200,000 babies worldwide every year.

Mexico
For the ninth year, Change for Good funds continued to support working with street children, providing shelter, food, hygiene, education, clothes, recreation and skills training.

Emergency relief

Iraq
UNICEF has a long-term commitment to the children of Iraq, having worked in the country since 1952. This year, in the aftermath of the war, Change for Good contributed £30,000 to UNICEF’s relief efforts, which focused particularly on water, nutrition, education, rebuilding work and restoring immunisation programmes. It is a huge task and it still continues, but with your help, Change for Good was able to be a part of it.

How to get involved

2002

Zambia
Change for Good fully funded the immunisation of all children under 5 against polio in Zambia. Over 1.2 million children were vaccinated, including those in remote areas. The programme was such a success that Zambia did not need to do a follow-up campaign in 2003 as no new cases of Polio were reported.

Nigeria
In November 2002 children from Kuje, Abuja, in Nigeria watched in anticipation as their new school building was declared officially open. The children had gone from a dilapidated building with virtually no materials to a new school complete with new classrooms, toilets, running water, furniture and books.
