British Airways Communities & Conservation (BACC)

Since 1984 British Airways has offered assistance to community and conservation projects around the world.

Our support enables these projects to redirect crucial funds towards essentials such as equipment, education and sustainable tourism for the benefit of the environment and/or host community.

We currently support over 130 community and conservation projects with an allocation of complimentary tickets and complimentary cargo consignments. These projects are diverse and support the delivery of our five corporate priorities.

Our aim is to support programmes across the British Airways route network focusing on the key themes of:

  • education and youth development
  • sustainable tourism
  • environment
  • heritage
  • supporting of staff-led projects

Applying for support

  • Each project must make an application to join the scheme.
  • We accept applications every February and projects are advised if they have been successful at the beginning of April.
  • We develop long-standing relationships with the projects we support, usually lasting for several years.
  • We review each allocation at the beginning of each financial year.
  • If an application is successful the project receives an allocation of complimentary flights, which are subject to availability.
  • Please note that we will only consider applications from registered charities.

British Airways Global Youth Development initiatives

Children using new computers in Kenya.

Pakistan and Kenya

British Airways refurbished and donated over 460 computers and laptops to projects in Pakistan and Kenya in early 2007. Software and connectivity have been donated to two major programmes in partnership with Microsoft and CICSO systems. These donations have resulted in the setting up of an ICT learning centre for 4,000 children and a hairdressing training salon for young adults in the community of Mukuru in the heart of Nairobi. This initiative will be extended to other schools in the Mukuru community in 2007-2008.

South Africa

Young people in the safer schools programme, Cape Town.

British Airways has been a key partner in the development of a major youth diversion and safer schools project in Cape Town with the Metropolitan Police, Charlton FC, the British High Commission and the South African Police Service. We have invested over £50,000 in the programme this year by providing flights, cargo space and personnel to support the project.

The partnership team participated in a sports and citizenship programme for the children and young people from the townships of Mitchells Plain and Khyaleitshia. 28 youth coaches were trained by Charlton Athletic FC and gained the Level 1 coaching skills qualification. British Airways ran health and well-being workshops for over 1500 children and the Metropolitan Police facilitated activities on personal safety.
