We recommend starting your car rental tour with a 90-minute drive south of Calgary, to the intriguingly named Head-Smashed-In-Buffalo Jump. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was where the Blackfoot Native Canadians once hunted buffalo by herding them over a huge cliff in their hundreds.

Car rental will take you to the stunning Waterton Lakes National Park, and then on to the historic Cowboy Trail.

Another great car rental journey is out to Banff National Park. Just two hours west of Calgary, the park highlights the beauty of the Canadian Rockies, a landscape of glacial lakes, forests, rivers and hot springs. This area is also home to some beautiful wildlife, including wolves, grizzly bears, elk and eagles.

Canmore is the town at the entrance to Banff National Park. Stop by here on your car rental tour. Its shops, art galleries and restaurants will help you recharge your batteries. It's then on to the town of Banff itself, further into the park by car rental. This picturesque town features the famous Banff Springs Hotel, built by the Canadian Pacific Railway.

An hour west of Banff is the awe-inspiring Lake Louise. This popular area is renowned for its beauty and also for the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Hotel. This famous resort overlooks majestic mountains, (great for skiing), and the Victoria Glacier. In the summer, the lake is popular with canoeists, while in the frozen winter it acts as an ice rink.
