Get to know Cagliari by exploring the city's four districts. Lose yourself in the labyrinth of medieval lanes known as Marina by the port, then take a tour round the white limestone Castle and its intact city walls and towers in the Castello area. Discover the warren of streets to the west of the Castle called Stampace, and visit churches in more recent Villanova, east of the Castle. You'll find photo opportunities at every turn, from Castello's cobbled piazzas and pastel-hued houses to the views over Villanova's rooftops from the 13th-century Tower of San Pancrazio.
First-time visit
Walk around the Castle walls for bird's-eye views over Cagliari from the Spanish-era San Remy Bastion. From inside the Tower of San Pancrazio, built by the Pisans, you can look over to the Elephant Tower, Cagliari's other Pisan watchtower. Then head for the Museum Citadel to see prehistoric and Roman artefacts at the Archaeological Museum and Sardinian art in Cagliari's Art Gallery. Enjoy more fine views of Cagliari's port and castle from the Roman Amphitheatre overlooking the city.
Return visit
Cagliari has a rich collection of churches to discover. Start with the treasury and frescoed crypt of St Eulalia in the medieval Marina district, then drop into the Cathedral, with its replica Pisan-Romanesque façade and original bell tower. Finally, admire the Rococo splendour of the Church of St Michele. Relax on miles of white-sand beach at Poetto, just a mile east of Cagliari, or spot flamingos at the nearby Molentargius marshlands. Stay longer at the beach for night-time clubbing on the sand. For a quiet evening, pull up a chair outside an elegant cafe overlooking Marina's cobbled squares.
