On your first visit to Brisbane, you'll be charmed by Brisbane’s laidback
subtropical ambience and inspired by world-class art at the Queensland Gallery of
Modern Art. When you come back for more, you’ll discover lively inner-city bars
and cafes in the Fortitude Valley and West End areas. See marvellous views
of the city and beyond from the lookout on top of Mount Coot-tha.
Background
The Brisbane River loops its way across Brisbane, from West End over to
New Farm and Fortitude Valley in Brisbane’s east. Brisbane’s
extensive Cultural Precinct fills the river’s South Bank, backed by
Little Stanley Street’s restaurant strip. Nearby you can wind down on
popular Streets Beach, an artificial inner-city beach complete with white
sand, sparkling lagoons and shady palm trees. You’ll find Brisbane’s city centre,
museums and public buildings directly over the Brisbane River, focused on
pedestrianised Queen Street Mall. Nestling nearby in a loop in the Brisbane
River are the exotic City Botanic Gardens.
First-time visit
Before relaxing on the beach at South Bank, explore Australian and Pacific art
at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art. Or learn about everything from
dinosaurs to dung beetles at the Queensland Museum. Cruise the snaking
Brisbane River on a CityCat catamaran ferry to see Brisbane from the
water. Take a look at the Italian-style former Treasury Building and the
copper-roofed Parliament House. Then relax under a huge Moreton Bay fig tree
in the shady City Botanic Gardens.
Return visit
Take a stroll in inner-city Paddington to hunt for treasures in quaint antique
shops in Latrobe Terrace. Make your way to the top of the Mount Coot-tha
Lookout for views over Brisbane to Moreton Bay, and think about taking a
daytrip to the bay islands or tranquil Stradbroke Island. See cute koalas at
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary then go clothes shopping in inner-north
Fortitude Valley and New Farm. Walk around the rose gardens at
New Farm Park, pick up fresh produce at the farmers’ market and browse
for one-off accessories at the Brunswick Street Markets.
