New simpler baggage policy - major changes announced

We have announced a new simpler checked and excess baggage policy, which will come into effect on 13 February 2007.

The new policies will bring changes to checked and excess baggage allowances and will take effect across the airline’s global network.

Free checked baggage allowances

A single allowance system based on the number of bags that can be checked in will be introduced for travel from 13 February 2007.

FIRST and Club World
Customers will be able to check three bags into the aircraft hold free of charge.

Club Europe and World Traveller Plus
Customers will be able to check two bags into the aircraft hold free of charge.

World Traveller*, Euro Traveller, BA Connect & UK Domestic
Customers will be able to check one bag into the aircraft hold free of charge.

Key changes for Longhaul customers*

*World Traveller customers travelling / connecting to or from the US, Canada, Caribbean, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico will continue to be allowed two checked bags in line with the local government regulations.

^To allow our customers to become familiar with our new baggage policy and weight limitations, we will continue to accept bags at check-in weighing up to 32kgs for travel completed by 30 September 2007.

*World Traveller customers travelling / connecting to or from the US, Canada, Caribbean, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico will continue to be allowed two checked bags in line with the local government regulations.

^To allow our customers to become familiar with our new baggage policy and weight limitations, we will continue to accept bags at check-in weighing up to 32kgs for travel completed by 30 September 2007.

  • Infants will be allowed to check one bag, plus a collapsible baby buggy and a car seat, into the aircraft hold free of charge in all classes on all routes.
  • For any connecting journey on British Airways, the most generous allowance will apply.
  • Customers will be able to carry one piece of sporting equipment free of charge in addition to their checked baggage allowance.
  • The new British Airways policy has a maximum bag weight of 23kg (51lbs). However, to allow our customers to become familiar with our new baggage policy and weight limitations, we will continue to accept bags at check-in weighing up to 32kgs for travel completed by 30 September 2007.

Maximum size and weight

We will not accept oversized items exceeding 2.5m x 1.00m x 0.80m (98in x 39in x 31in), with the following exceptions: musical instruments, electric wheelchairs, some sporting items, TV news cameras, commercial spares. If you are travelling with any of these items, please notify us at the time of booking, or at a minimum of 24 hours before departure.

The new British Airways baggage policy has a maximum bag weight of 23kg (51lbs). However, to allow our customers to become familiar with our new baggage policy and weight limitations, we will continue to accept bags at check-in weighing up to 32kgs for travel completed by 30 September 2007.

Excess Baggage

Excess baggage charges will be standardised across the network from 13 February 2007.

All baggage in excess of free checked baggage allowances will be charged at a fixed fee depending on the length of the journey. 

For customers transferring flights, a single charge based on the longest flight will apply.

Customers on most routes can pre-pay online for their excess baggage and receive a 30% discount on airport charges, when travel is completed by 30 September 2007. The pre-pay facility can be accessed through Manage My Booking. Pre-pay is not available on certain routes, and some credit cards cannot be used as payment methods.

Excess baggage will be charged at a fixed fee per bag. The fixed fee is set according to whether the customer is travelling on a domestic (£30), shorthaul (£60) or longhaul (£120) flight.

On Loganair domestic flights, all passengers travelling in any class may take 15kg (33lbs) checked baggage.
