Travel Alert

If you're planning a leisure or business trip to Bangladesh, note that British Embassy advises against non-essential travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts because of the high risk of civil unrest. Contact your embassy or consulate in advance for up-to-date travel information and heed local advice on safety.

Background

Bangladesh seems like one huge riverbank. After you've seen all the cultural attractions in capital Dhaka, sail south along the mighty Meghna, Jamuna and Madhumati rivers towards the Bay of Bengal and the Khulna and Barisal regions. In the south-west you'll find the huge UNESCO-listed Sundarbans National Park, home to mangrove forests and Bengal tigers. For a taste of tribal life, head east to Chittagong, which is crammed with dense jungle and bamboo. Here you'll find tribal groups with a Buddhist-Burmese culture.

Urban

Head to the chaotic metropolis of Dhaka to see ancient sculptures and terracotta carvings at the Bangladesh National Museum. Then take a peek at the domed Star Mosque, decorated with star-shaped tiles. After a trip to Old Dhaka's bustling bazaars, cool down on a boat trip along Buriganga River. Head south to port city Chittagong and join locals at the Zia Memorial Museum, where former Bangladeshi leader Ziaur Rahman was assassinated in 1981. In busy Cox's Bazaar beach resort, explore the Buddhist monastery Aggameda Khyang.

Rural

You'll quickly realise why Bangladesh is renowned for its lush rural landscape of riverbanks, coastline and jungles. Try to spot a Bengal tiger in the vast Sundarbans National Park, a 50-mile-long stretch of jungle and mangrove swamps. If you're after solitude, you'll find it amid coral and turtles around St Martin's Island off Cox's Bazaar. Remote Inani Beach is the perfect place to sun yourself. Take a boat trip to tribal villages on the vast Kaptai Lake, surrounded by banana plantations. Or visit green carpeted tea estates and forest reserves at Srimangal.
