Restrictions and allowances for liquids departing from...

European countries

The EU rules apply if you are travelling from any airport within the EU, including the UK, and if you are travelling from Albania, Croatia, Iceland, India, Kenya, Kosovo, Norway, Pakistan, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Switzerland and Ukraine, irrespective of your destination.

Countries affected by the European Union liquids policy

Specific restrictions on liquids

Restrictions on the quantities of liquids, gels or pastes are:

  • they must be held in individual containers not exceeding 100ml
  • the containers must be carried in a separate, clear-plastic, zip-top or re-sealable bag
  • the bag must not exceed 20cm x 20cm (8ins x 8ins) in dimensions
  • the bag must not exceed one litre capacity
  • the bag must be completely closed
  • the items must fit comfortably in the bag
  • the bag must be x-ray screened separately from other hand baggage at airport security points.

You can purchase duty-free liquids at the airport or on board if your journey is wholly within the EU.

For other journeys and destinations, you should refer to the specific country restrictions.

We advise you not to purchase liquid items in duty-free shops until you reach an EU airport.

USA and Canada

Restrictions on the quantities of liquids, gels or pastes are:

  • they must be held in individual containers not exceeding 100ml (3.5 US ounces)
  • the containers must be carried in a separate, clear-plastic, zip-top or re-sealable bag
  • the bag must not exceed 20cm x 20cm (8ins x 8ins) in dimensions
  • the bag must not exceed one litre capacity
  • the bag must be completely closed
  • the items must fit comfortably in the bag
  • the bag must be x-ray screened separately from other hand baggage at airport security points
  • before boarding, secondary searches may be performed if you are carrying liquids.

Duty-free goods containing liquids may be carried, provided they are purchased after the security screening point. We advise you to pack any duty-free liquids in your checked baggage where possible.

If you are departing the US or Canada, your duty-free liquids will be delivered to the boarding gate or pick-up point in the secure area in a Sealable Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB).

Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Thailand

Australia

If you are travelling from London Heathrow to Sydney and transferring through Bangkok or Singapore or if you are making direct domestic connections in Sydney:

  • you can purchase duty-free liquids at the arrivals duty-free shop
  • you can purchase duty-free liquids on board the aircraft
  • if you are transferring through Singapore, you can purchase duty-free liquids at the airport duty-free shop, which will be delivered to your gate in an Australian government-approved Sealable Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB)
  • any other duty-free goods containing liquids cannot be carried into Australia.

If you are making direct connections in Sydney to international destinations, you will not be allowed to carry duty-free goods containing liquids through any security checks. However, you will be able to make purchases at the departure duty-free shops.

New Zealand

New Zealand has implemented restrictions in line with the Australian liquids policy.

Singapore

Singapore has implemented restrictions in line with the EU liquids policy.

Duty-free goods containing liquids can be carried:

  • if your journey originates or terminates in Singapore
  • if you are transferring directly through Singapore to any airport in Australia or the USA, but you may only make purchases from the departure duty-free shop. These will be delivered to the gate in Sealable Tamper-Evident Bags (STEBs)
  • if you are travelling through Singapore to any other international destination, items purchased in duty-free shops prior to arrival at Singapore or during the flight must be packed in STEBs. Additional duty-free goods can be purchased at the departure duty-free shop.

Thailand

Thailand has introduced restrictions in line with the EU liquids policy.

Duty-free goods containing liquids can be carried:

  • if your final destination is Bangkok
  • if you are transferring through Bangkok to any Australian airport, but you may only purchase duty-free liquids on the flight to Sydney or at the Sydney arrivals duty-free shops
  • if you are transferring directly through Bangkok to any other domestic and international destination (with the exception of the USA), but they must be placed in Secure Tamper-Evident Bags (STEBs). This includes items bought prior to arrival at Bangkok or during the flight
  • if they are purchased at the Bangkok duty-free shops; these will be packed in STEBs for you.

South Africa and Mauritius

South Africa

South Africa has implemented restrictions in line with the EU liquids policy. These restrictions apply to all departing international passengers, including those making an international transfer at a South African airport.

Duty-free goods containing liquids can be carried:

  • if your final destination is Johannesburg or Cape Town
  • if you are transferring through Johannesburg or Cape Town on to domestic services
  • if you are departing from a South African airport on a domestic route.

Duty-free goods containing liquids cannot be carried:

  • if you are transferring through Johannesburg or Cape Town on to an international service
  • if you are transferring through any other South African airport.

Mauritius

Mauritius has implemented restrictions in line with the EU liquids policy.

These restrictions apply to all departing passengers.

Bahamas, Cayman, Turks and Caicos and Caribbean Islands

Bahamas, Cayman Islands and Turks and Caicos Islands

The restrictions are as stated in the EU policy.

Caribbean Islands - Antigua and Barbados

If your destination is in the USA, the joint USA and Canadian liquids policy applies for these Caribbean islands.

Caribbean Islands - Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and St. Lucia

The joint USA and Canadian liquids policy applies for these Caribbean islands.

Brazil and Chile

Brazil

The restrictions are as stated in the EU policy.

Chile

If you are flying direct to Chile as a final destination, there are no restrictions in place.

However, if you are transferring through Chile to Brazil, the restrictions for Brazil will apply.

China, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan and Taiwan

China

China liquids policy is in line with the EU liquids policy when you fly on any international or domestic routes.

Duty-free goods containing liquids can be carried:

  • if your final destination is Beijing or Shanghai
  • if you are transferring in Beijing on to an international service, but they must be carried in an industry-standard, Sealable Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB)
  • if your journey originates in Shanghai.

If you are travelling to any other international destination, the following additional restrictions will apply to you:

  • a maximum liquid volume of 500ml can be carried in either hand or checked baggage
  • any alcohol carried as part of this allowance must be carried in checked baggage unless it is purchased in the departure duty-free shops when it will be carried as hand baggage.

 Duty-free goods containing liquids cannot be carried:

  • if you are transferring through Beijing or Shanghai on to domestic services, but these may be placed in your checked baggage
  • if you are transferring in Shanghai on to an international service

Hong Kong

Hong Kong has implemented restrictions in line with the EU liquids policy.

If you are transferring from Heathrow directly through Hong Kong, you are allowed to carry duty-free liquids bought on the plane, provided:

  • they are placed in a Sealable Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB)
  • proof of purchase is provided at transfer screening points in Hong Kong International Airport.

Macau

Macau has implemented restrictions in line with the EU liquids policy.

These restrictions apply to all departing passengers.

Japan

Japan has introduced restrictions on liquids in line with the EU liquids policy.

There are no restrictions if you are travelling on domestic flights within Japan.

United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi, Dubai), Kuwait and Qatar

UAE - Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi has implemented restrictions in line with the EU liquids policy. These restrictions apply to all departing passengers.

Duty-free goods containing liquids can be carried:

  • if you are transferring through Abu Dhabi, but they must be packed in a Secure Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB).

UAE - Dubai

Dubai has implemented restrictions in line with the EU liquids policy. These restrictions apply to all departing passengers.

Duty-free goods containing liquids can be carried:

  • if you are transferring through Dubai, but they must be packed in a Secure Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB).

Kuwait

Kuwait has implemented restrictions in line with the EU liquids policy for all departing passengers.

If you are transferring directly through Kuwait, you will be permitted to carry duty-free goods through security, provided:

  • they are placed in a Sealable Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB) that clearly identifies the purchase point
  • a visible receipt and proof of purchase is made available.

Qatar

Qatar has implemented restrictions in line with the EU liquids policy.

Malaysia, Indonesia and the Republic of Korea

Malaysia

Malaysia has implemented restrictions in line with the EU liquids policy.

These restrictions apply to all departing passengers.

Indonesia

Indonesia has implemented restrictions in line with the EU liquids policy.

These restrictions apply to all departing passengers.

Republic of Korea

The Republic of Korea has implemented restrictions in line with the EU liquids policy.

These restrictions apply to all departing passengers.
