Julie's story

Julie Hart, 30, is a London based Project Manager whose job takes her on frequent trips to the US, mainly San Francisco. Her hectic meeting schedule often means that she has very little time to freshen up from her trip before her first meeting, so she has developed a flexible routine that can be expanded or minimised according to the time she has available when she arrives.

Her golden rule for dealing with jet lag? Relax and don't worry! Getting frustrated because you can’t sleep will only make you feel worse.

Julie's tips

On the aircraft

  • Eye mask and earplugs are useful to reduce any background disturbance
  • A good book to relax with
  • A relaxation CD if you can't sleep
  • No alcohol or caffeine
  • Lots of water
  • Herbal tea, especially peppermint or camomile
  • Gentle stretches or a walk up and down the aisle sometimes helps relaxation

At your destination

  • Have a shower, a coffee and something light to eat on arrival
  • Keep yourself busy: unpack, tidy up, watch TV
  • Don't lie down or read – you'll probably fall asleep
  • Set yourself a target for when you are going to go to bed and stick to it
  • Set an alarm for waking up at the right time to get your body clock used to its new time
  • Avoid rich or heavy food for a few days
