Get a taste of the past in the granite city of Aberdeen at the Maritime Museum and
harbour, then soak up the 15th-century surroundings of Old Aberdeen. Your kids
will love working up an appetite at Satrosphere, the interactive science centre,
then eating fish and chips looking across the golden sands of Aberdeen's beach.
Background
It's easy to find your way around Aberdeen. Follow busy Union Street, lined
with Victorian buildings, which cuts across from east to west.
It's packed with shops, bars and restaurants, and is the hub of transport
links in and out of the city. Head north for Gothic Marischal College,
formerly an independent college, now part of the University of Aberdeen with its own
local history museum. Go east to see the working harbour and Maritime Museum. Just a
mile north are the cobbled streets of Old Aberdeen, with the twin towers of
15th-century St Machar's Cathedral.
First-time visit
Take your time to wander around the marble-lined building which houses Aberdeen
Art Gallery's collection of Impressionists and Scottish Colourists.
You can find out about the city's seafaring history, from the early fishing
days to the oil industry, at the Maritime Museum. Then take the family to
Satrosphere science centre next to the beach. Take a step back in time
around Old Aberdeen, exploring streets and buildings dating back to the 15th
century. Go for traditional fish and chips eaten out of the paper down at the
beach.
Return visit
You'll learn all about one of the army's most famous regiments at
the Gordon Highlanders Museum. Get close to nature with a walk around the
Victorian Winter Gardens at Duthie Park, packed with palms, cacti and
rainforest blooms. In nearby Stonehaven, you can enjoy aerial views of the
North Sea from windswept Dunnottar Castle. Tee off at championship Royal
Aberdeen golf course, then end the day with a pint in a traditional pub
overlooking the harbour.
