Ibiza

View of Ibiza town by night.
Overview

Think you've got the measure of Ibiza? Think again - away from the lively nightlife hotspots, the island harbours secluded coves, family resorts, pine-scented hills and vibrant Catalan culture. Choose glamorous Ibiza Town for a heady blend of ancient sites and party venues, or visit brand new Ibiza Rocks Hotel for cocktails by the pool.

Background

Wander the steep, labyrinthine streets and imposing fortress walls that mark out Eivissa Dalt Vila (Ibiza Old Town) in the south. Beyond, find the reed-fringed salt marshes of Ses Salines nature reserve where early Carthaginians extracted 'white gold' from the salty Mediterranean Sea. Clubbers flock to the westerly resort of San Antonio for sunsets and Balearic beats, while in the north you'll find forested hills concealing celebrity villas and karma-cleansing yoga retreats.

First-time visit

Climb the cobbled streets of Evissa's Dalt Vila, where the eighth-century castle foundations provide an excellent lookout. Dine late with the Ibizans on Catalan cuisine. Then make a stylish entrance by boat to glitzy harbourfront nightclub, El Davino. Dance barefoot on the sand at Bora Bora or on the terrace at mega-club Space, both on Playa d'en Bossa. During the day clear your head snorkelling, diving or jet-skiing in the watery playground of San Antonio Bay. Or trek to the island's highest point, Sa Talaia, definitely worth the climb for the island views.

Return visit

Seek out exclusive parties in glamorous villas and float on sparkly waters in secluded Playa de S'Estanyol, where swimming suits are optional. Or get into the hippy vibe with bongos on the beach at Benirras. Drive into the pine-clad hills of the Sierra Grossa, glorious with wild flowers in the spring, or descend into the mysterious C'an Marça Caves. The pirate tower at Cala Conta once warned islanders of impending invasions, now it's ideal for sunset picnics. Escape across azure waters to the neighbouring island of Formentera or visit out of season (January and February) to see the magical almond blossom spread its pinky-white haze across the Santa Ines valley.
