With a history as a pirate hotspot due to its inaccessibility (the first bridges were built in 1905), Key West holds an annual celebration of this heritage. The once-feared pirate threat has been turned into a cause for celebration as visitors and locals hold a series of parties and events.
The festival, which takes place all over the island, includes a large number of pirate re-enactments on both land and sea. There are daily pirate sails and tall ship sea battles, diving excursions to shipwrecks, lectures, writers' seminars, dinners, parades and dances. If you're heading to the Keys during this time, pack your pantaloons and get involved.
Please visit the Pirates in Paradise website for specific details of the events schedule.
Event details can change. Please check with the organisers that the event is happening before making travel arrangements.
