Stroll through Málaga's historical centre, taking in the bohemian atmosphere that was once a choice meeting-spot for 19th-century artists like playwright Federico García Lorca. Nowadays this is the best area in the city for shopping and eating out.

Málaga's Historical Centre, Málaga. Courtesy of Ayuntamiento de MálagaMálaga's historical centre is a maze of charming pedestrianised streets, lined with honey-coloured buildings and Andalusian balconies. Some of the city's best tapas bars can be found here, tucked away down narrow streets or spilling out onto large squares. Café Central in the Plaza de la Constitución is a very traditional spot, dishing up tasty tapas and excellent breakfast churros (friend doughnut strips). The cafe also serves coffee in nine different ways - consult the tiled picture guide on the wall before you ask for what you want!

Contrasting with historical buildings, Málaga's historical centre also offers a wide range of modern shops. Calle Marqués de Larios and Calle Nueva in particular are home to some of the best-known Spanish outlets, both high street and designer.
