The grand Alcazaba sits majestically on a hilltop, overlooking the port and historic centre of Málaga. Built mainly in the 11th century, the fortress-palace used to house Muslim governors, back when southern Spain lay under Moorish rule.

The Alcazaba, Málaga. © TurespañaThe entrance of the Alcazaba leads to the tower Torre de Cristo, which was used as a Christian chapel for many years following the Reconquest of Southern Spain by the Catholic monarchs Isabel and Fernando (Los Reyes Católicos).

Following on from this tower, visitors can access the palace, the oldest part of the building which dates back to the early 11th century, and a fascinating barrio de viviendas (living quarters), a maze of winding cobbled alleyways where the Moorish officials once lived.

Highlights of this section include richly decorated archways or arquerias and the Maldonado Tower, which boasts a beautiful series of marble pillars and a magnificent view of the city.
