The Palazzo Ducale stands on Genoa's most elegant square, Piazza de Ferrari. Once the seat of the city's rulers, it is now its top cultural centre.
The construction of the Palazzo Ducale began during the flourishing Republican period of the city's history. In the 14th century it was enlarged, with buildings added to the original one, fulfilling the need for an inner square.
The medieval structure disappeared with the works carried out during the 16th century when the Palazzo Ducale acquired a new appearance which would represent more fittingly the new oligarchic Republic.
Today, the Palazzo Ducale houses several rooms - the jazz room, cinema room, photography room, robotic room and the poetry room. It is also home to an educational centre for kids and a variety of temporary art exhibitions.
