Introduced to Trinidad by Spanish American peons, Parang is a catchy type of folk music and usually religious. Big crowds flock to the many music competitions in Parang Season, featuring traditional Spanish arepas and empanadas and well-stocked bars...
The infectious Latin sounds of Parang Season are to Christmas in Trinidad as snow is to winter in the northern hemisphere. The music is fast-paced and sung to the danceable rhythms of the shak shak (local name for maracas), cuatro (a small guitar), mandolin, box bass and tambourine.
Although the Spanish community is relatively small today, Parang has infiltrated every other community in multicultural Trinidad. Several groups come together during the Parang Season to compete for supremacy.
