Nigeria became an independent nation, after years of colonial rule from Britain, on 1 October 1960. The Independence Day festivities are the country's biggest annual celebration, taking place in each of the 36 states and the capital territory, Abuja.
The ceremony starts with an address by the President to the nation, broadcast live on television and radio. This is followed by a parade by members of the armed forces, students and unions, accompanied by cultural dance groups and singers.
The celebrations are held either at the state stadium or the parade ground in the capital city of each state.
Event details can change. Please check with the organisers that the event is happening before making travel arrangements.
