Calabar Museum, one of Nigeria's best, is housed in an impressive building, and is one of the main attractions in this 15th-century European trade route stop-off. Exhibits look at Nigerian traditions and tribes, the pre-colonial era and the slave trade.
The museum is set in the Old Government House, the former residence of the colonial governor, on the hill overlooking the waterfront. The historic building was both designed and built in Glasgow, then shipped over in pieces and erected on site. As well as a wealth of information on slavery, the history of palm oil production is also documented. As the museum is often not busy, if you ask nicely you might even get a guided tour from one of the staff.
The city itself sits on the Calabar River, with panoramic views over the surrounding hills, and is one of the best preserved old cities in Nigeria.
