The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is one of the world's most famous, thrilling and dramatic ocean races. A Boxing Day tradition since 1945, the race runs from Sydney Harbour to the island State of Tasmania across the Tasman Sea.
The first ever Sydney Hobart Yacht Race had only nine competitors, and was won by Rani, skippered by John Illingworth, in six days, 14 hours and 22 minutes. The event now attracts an annual field of over 60 yachts and usually has a winning time of under two days!
For those wanting to watch the start of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht race, Australia's premier city offers great views as the competitors set off from one of the world's great natural harbours. From the undulating hills up to Point Piper and Vaucluse, the start is one of the most stunning scenes you're likely to witness. If you're not up on a hill, jump on a ferry to Circular Quay or the suburb of Manly and watch from close quarters. It's a great way to forget the post-Christmas hangovers and get out of the house!
With Rolex now sponsoring the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, the winner receives two magnificent Rolex chronometers.
