Rome boasts over 300km of underground burial corridors, some of which are open to the public. These include the Catacombs of Saint Sebastian, with mosaics, graffiti and other pagan and Christian objects from centuries before the time of Constantine.
The tradition of underground burial originates in the pagan religion, but the catacombs also played an essential role for Christians. Their secluded location was ideal for performing forbidden ceremonies and hiding the bodies of saints.
