Sitting on Palma de Mallorca's waterfront, La Seu Cathedral is a blend of Medieval and Renaissance styles with large bell towers, a high altar, side chapels and Gothic arches. Legendary Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí even contributed to its amazing structure.

La Seu Cathedral, Palma de Mallorca. Courtesy of Media-ConsultaLa Seu Cathedral occupies the site of an earlier Moorish mosque, harking back to the early-10th century, when Mallorca was ruled by the Emirate of Córdoba. The cathedral's central vault is 43 metres high and its columns rise 20 metres. There is a famous rose window through which light pours in, one of the world's largest stained-glass windows with over a thousand colourful pieces. Gaudí's wrought-iron canopy over the main altar and his controversial unfinished Crown of Thorns are also focal points.

Although the interior of La Seu is undoubtedly beautiful, it is best appreciated when looking towards its sandstone exterior from the seafront. The cathedral was originally built as a symbol of Mallorca's Christian conquerors for all who arrived by sea, and its presence is as imposing as ever as it towers above the old city walls.
