Oslo's central Munch Museum houses The Scream and Madonna among other paintings by Norwegian Expressionist painter Edvard Munch (1863-1944). Films, lectures and guided tours give deeper insight into the tormented painter's motivations and style.
When Munch died in January 1944, it turned out that he had left all his remaining works to the City of Oslo. Munch's work is the most significant Norwegian contribution to the history of art, and he is the only Norwegian artist who has exercised a decisive influence on European art trends, notably as a pioneer of Expressionism in Germany and the Nordic countries.
