Every Christmas, Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples becomes an open-air art gallery, showcasing for a month the talent of a different artist. The 2009/2010 edition presents two site-specific installations by Carsten Nicolai, one of which is displayed at MADRE.
With Pionier I the artist utilises a parachute, vaguely resembling those used in space exploration, powered by a fan and illuminated by strong reflectors to highlight the structure as nigh falls. Pionier II sees hot-air balloons floating above Piazza del Plebiscito while a sound transposition of the telluric waves produced by the Vesuvio accompanies the installation.
Both projects relate to the interaction between the geology of the area and the city of Naples. For further information, please visit the Ritorno al Barocco website.
