The Safari Rally Kenya is the second leg of the FIA African Rally Championship and takes place in the tough and dusty terrain in and around Nairobi.
The Safari Rally first took place in 1953 and is known as one of the toughest rallies in the world. Competitors have to navigate the difficult 800km route through Kenyan bush, negotiating obstacles ranging from herds of wild animals to pot-holed tracks along the way.
The rally opens with a popular 1km spectator stage in Nairobi's Uhuru Park. The route continues with the first leg towards Nakuru and around Lake Elementaita. The second leg takes place around the small town of Athi River near Nairobi.
Azar Anwar made history in 2006 by becoming the first Kenyan to win the event. Zimbabwean Conrad Rautenbach was the winner in 2007.
