Henri Fantin-Latour is best known for his intricate still life paintings and captivating group portraits of his family and friends in Paris. This solo exhibition at Madrid's Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum showcases 70 works completed by the French artist from 1836 to 1904.
The exhibition is divided into ten sections, which cover different phases of the artist's career from his early self-portraits to simplistic floral compositions dating to the late-19th century onwards.
Fantin-Latour's meticulous attention to detail is most eye catching in his realist still lifes of flowers from the mid-19th century. Look out for La Table Garnie (1866) and Summer Flowers and Fruit (1866) in this exhibition at the Thyssen. Also take time to observe the artist's large-scale group portraits, in particular Corner of a Table (1872), on loan from the Musee d'Orsay in Paris.
