A typically refreshing triple bill from the Royal Ballet brings together Balanchine's Agon, Gwen Tetley's Sphinx and a new work by resident choreographer Wayne McGregor. Limen is danced to a Kaija Saariaho score, here receiving its UK première.

Carlos Acosta in Balanchine's Agon for the Royal Ballet. Photo Bill Cooper, courtesy Royal BalletFollowing Agon (1957), set to Stravinsky's austere score (conducted by Daniel Capps), Gwen Tetley's Sphinx, in using music by Bohemian composer Bohuslav Martinu, commemorates the 50th anniversary of Martinu's death. Barry Wordsworth conducts.

Wordsworth also conducts McGregor's new work, Limen. Always favouring contemporary composers (most recently with both Joby Talbot for Chroma and Max Richter for Infra), here McGregor uses Saariaho's Notes on Light, written for cellist Anssi Kartunen who joins the Royal Opera House Orchestra.
