The centre of Chicago takes on some of the trappings of a typical German Christmas - with a rather better chance of snow - as Daley Plaza hosts the annual Christkindlmarket.
The Christkindlmarket (literally "Christ Child Market") is based on the famous outdoor Christmas fairs in Germany, which date back to medieval times. It features handmade glass ornaments, wooden toys, cuckoo clocks, nutcrackers and the distinctive gingerbread cookies baked in Nuremberg. Traditional German and American food is also available.
Don't miss the chance to warm up with some Glühwein, the hot mulled red wine that features at every German Christmas event. Children can visit Santa's house or enjoy a ride on the merry-go-round. A variety of entertainment is laid on for visitors, including carol singers and brass bands.
Event details can change. Please check with the organisers that the event is happening before making travel arrangements.
