Calgary hosts one of the world's greatest rodeos every year at Stampede Park, attracting over a million visitors. The Calgary Stampede mixes the thrills of a high-stakes professional rodeo with family activities and entertainment, providing ten days packed with fun.
The origin of this annual bash lies in late 19th-century agricultural fairs, but the rodeo began to move to the centre of events in the 1920s, thanks to the efforts of cowboy-entrepreneur Guy Wiedeck. By 1976 visitor numbers topped one million and the Stampede continues to grow.
Big prize money means ever more athletic professional cowboys, with bucking bronco and bull-riding events, steer wrestling, calf roping and other events showcasing their skills. The chuckwagon races have evolved into high-speed thrill rides, with specially designed wagons pulled by thoroughbreds.
