Cagliari's Roman Amphitheatre was built between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, the time of the gladiators. Dug into the limestone of the Buon Camino mountain itself, the theatre could hold up to 10,000 spectators.
Exotic animal hunting, public executions and dramatic duels to the death between gladiators would all take place here. Today the amphitheatre retains the major part of the elliptical tiers, the caves, the walls and the terrace from where the VIPs would watch the games. Besides its archaeological importance, it is also the venue for special events.
