Housed in one of the world's largest granite buildings, Marischal College in the city centre, the Marischal Museum is owned and run by Aberdeen University. Its world-class collection ranges from Egyptian and Classical antiquities via non-Western ethnography to Scottish prehistory and numismatics.
The first, Encyclopaedia of the North East, traces some 8000 years of history of the region in alphabetical order, so creating some unusual juxtapositions across time. The other permanent exhibition - Collecting the World - shows how the collection has grown with time mainly thanks to the stewardship of a few individuals. Other collections worth catching at the University of Aberdeen are the Herbarium, the Anatomy Museum, the Geological collections, the Zoology Museum, the National Philosophy Collection of Scientific Instruments and the Pathology and Forensic Medicine Collection.
