The Incwala ceremony in Chipata is a proud commemoration of the glorious deeds and victories over other tribes that the Ngoni people experienced on their journey from South Africa to Zambia.
The ceremony centres around the tasting of the first fruits of the New Year by the chief. This action is accompanied by ritual dancing and feasting. These activities are designed to strengthen the communal bonds within the tribe's society. Dancers perform repetitive movements in response to the rhythm of drums, creating a hypnotic atmosphere of motion and music.
The Ngoni people live in the far east of Zambia, near the border town of Chipata. From here, you can cross the border and relax on the beaches of Lake Malawi, or explore Zambia's best game reserves in the Luangwa Valley.
