Brimstone Hill Fortress is the grand historical site on St Kitts, and considerably more interesting than the rather insignificant old colonial buildings that some of the other Caribbean islands have elevated to "historical" status for the benefit of the tourist. Built on a natural hill 800 feet high, the grand citadel and surrounding fortifications of this British structure really are imposing, even magnificent.
The fortress makes both a literal and symbolic assertion of invading military might. Both the French and the British colonised St Christopher (now known by its nickname, St Kitts) and it was deemed a model of colonial management. The natives were obliterated, African slaves moved in and the island successfully milked for its sugar cane. The fortress itself was built by the British and African slaves to deter any potential usurpers and for administrational and governmental purposes.
The fortress is now partly in ruins, partly restored. The highlight of a visit is the grand citadel, which has been restored to show visitors what life was like. The ruins of the surrounding buildings and outhouses have spectacular views down to the nearby town of Sandy Point and over the surrounding landscape - which has been designated a National Park.
