The Scenic Railway is full of period detail and luxuriously designed, runs along on old sugar cane train tracks and takes you all round St Kitts in style. Your journey starts at the specially constructed station, Needsmust. From June to September the train runs on Monday and Wednesday and from October to May the schedule depends on the cruise ship arrivals.
Albeit constructed entirely for the tourist, the scenic railway really is very appealing. The customer has the choice of air-conditioned comfort on rattan chairs or a view from the open-topped viewing area - your ticket buys a seat in each. Amenities, a history of the Caribbean and even tasteful music is laid on.
This is the perfect way to admire the rolling verdant hills, the noble extinct volcano of Liamuiga and the pretty beaches of this ex-British colony. It's particularly appealing if you aren't feeling like marching about outside in the island's sweltering midday heat. The tour covers 30 miles and takes three and a half hours, round trip.
