At the annual Quéntar Moors and Christians Festival, locals re-enact the expulsion of the Moors from Las Alpujarras. They reproduce the important historical events with brightly coloured costumes and props, against a backdrop of whitewashed buildings and snow-capped mountains.

The Moorish expulsion in Las Alpujarras didn't take place during Ferdinand and Isabella's Catholic Reconquest throughout the rest of Spain. In fact, the Moors still lived in Las Alpujarras until 1568, when Aben Humeya initiated a rebellion. The war lasted until 1571.
