Ficksburg produces around 500 tons of cherries each year, representing about 95% of the South African harvest. The Ficksburg Cherry Festival is a celebration of the town's favourite crop, with events including tastings, pickings and family entertainment.
There are also horse shows, flower shows, a Mr Cherry Pip and a Miss Cherry Blossom competition and a fun run. The festival culminates in a carnival parade and firework display.
The mild summers and cold winters of this area are ideal for stone fruits generally and there are now 500 hectares of cherry tree plantations, with an average yield of ten tons per hectare!
